Jammu, June 22: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Jammu University Unit, on Sunday launched a Dharna in protest against the alleged violation of Jammu University’s Green Campus and No-Vehicle Zone policy following the entry of a police vehicle into the designated vehicle-free area of the campus.
Jammu University has, over the years, developed a strong culture of environmental responsibility through its Green Campus Initiative, under which movement within key areas of the campus is restricted to pedestrians and authorized electric vehicles (EVs). Students, faculty members, officers, employees, and visitors are expected to adhere to these norms to preserve the eco-friendly character of the University.
ABVP, which has consistently supported the Green Campus Initiative, stated that today’s incident has raised serious concerns regarding the uniform implementation of University regulations. The organization maintained that the entry of a conventional vehicle into the No-Vehicle Zone undermines both the spirit and credibility of the Green Campus policy.
The student body emphasized that rules framed by the University must be implemented equally and without exception. ABVP questioned whether any protocol or official privilege can be considered above the regulations and traditions that have long defined Jammu University’s commitment to sustainability and discipline.
ABVP further stated that when the Vice-Chancellor, professors, officers, employees, and thousands of students follow the Green Campus norms by moving on foot within the campus, there is no justification for granting special exemptions to any individual or institution.
“Jammu University has always been known for its culture of equality, discipline, and academic values. There is no place for VIP culture within the University campus. Jammu University believes in Students’ Culture, not VIP Culture. Every individual, irrespective of rank, designation, or official position, must respect and follow the same rules,” ABVP said in a statement.
As part of its protest, ABVP demanded strict and uniform enforcement of the No-Vehicle Zone policy across the campus. The organization urged the University administration to ensure that all individuals, irrespective of their official status or designation, comply with the Green Campus regulations and uphold the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability, equality, and institutional discipline.
