Jammu, July 20: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday announced an ex-gratia assistance of ₹6 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the recent flash floods, landslides and other rain-related incidents in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, the Chief Minister said the government shares the grief of the affected families and remains committed to providing every possible support during this difficult period. He noted that while financial assistance cannot compensate for the loss of a loved one, it is intended to provide immediate relief to the bereaved families.
According to the announcement, the compensation package comprises ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and an additional ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), taking the total ex-gratia assistance to ₹6 lakh for each deceased person’s next of kin.
The decision was taken following a high-level review of the damage caused by the recent spell of heavy rainfall, which triggered flash floods, landslides and widespread destruction in several parts of Rajouri and Poonch. The adverse weather claimed multiple lives and caused significant damage to homes, public infrastructure and road connectivity.
The Chief Minister directed the district administrations and all concerned departments to expedite relief and rehabilitation measures, ensure prompt disbursement of compensation, and extend all necessary assistance to affected families. He also instructed officials to restore essential services, clear damaged roads and infrastructure, and strengthen coordination among departments to ensure an effective response.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting disaster-affected communities, Omar Abdullah said every effort is being made to accelerate restoration work and provide timely relief so that normal life can be restored in the affected areas as quickly as possible.
