Jammu, June 29: Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College, Jammu, on Monday celebrated National Statistics Day 2026 with enthusiasm and academic zeal. Organised by the Department of Statistics under the guidance of Principal Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta, the programme focused on this year’s national theme, “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,” highlighting the growing role of data in strengthening governance and evidence-based policymaking.
The event began with a formal inaugural session attended by faculty members and students. Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Head of the Department of Statistics, welcomed the gathering and spoke about the significance of National Statistics Day, observed every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned statistician Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis, whose contributions laid the foundation of modern statistical planning in India.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta, Principal of the College and a distinguished Professor of Statistics, underscored the transformative role of administrative data in improving governance, transparency, accountability and public service delivery. He explained how the systematic collection, analysis and effective utilisation of administrative data can support informed policy decisions and enhance the efficiency of government institutions.
He further stressed the importance of maintaining data quality, protecting privacy and upholding ethical standards while using administrative data. Encouraging students to embrace innovation and interdisciplinary learning, Prof. Gupta urged young statisticians to leverage data science and analytical tools to address real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The programme also witnessed interactive discussions on the effective use of administrative data in policy formulation, monitoring developmental programmes and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Faculty members and undergraduate students actively participated in the deliberations, making the event a vibrant platform for learning and intellectual exchange.
The celebration concluded with a formal vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Principal, faculty members, organising committee and students for their enthusiastic participation and collective efforts in making the event a success.
